David Lean and Dickens
This evening we watched the David Lean version of Oliver Twist. Fagin was done by Alec Guinness. Like his version of Great Expectations - Lean seems to have understood what Dickens was writing about. This one was also in black and white. And again Lean used the elements of the camera to paint very different pictures in the stages of the story. Lean seems to have read Dickens well - he really catches the mood of the books. He also had a good idea for the characters - I am not sure who the actor was that played Bumble - but he was perfect. The relationship of adults to children - which is a constant Dickens theme is also presented well in this movie. This one too is well worth watching. Now on to Netflix to see if he did any other of CDs novels.
